In my case definitely boxed. That's why I'm quite annoyed they weren't included.
I got 2 units, retail box. I checked both boxes, no I/O-Shield 
correction:
There are a few reseller selling a shield, AS1200V3RPIOS,
but the pictures dont seem to fit my board (S1200V3RPM).
