Re: Is my plan to increase raid drive sizes and change partition sizes workable?

Great catch. I booted the machine with the Acronis DVD and it does see the virtual drive and its partitions with the correct formats but there is no indication that it knows it is a "raid volume".

I recently used this same process to upgrade the raid drives on a Dell PE T-100 server with a Dell SAS 6/iR raid adaptor and it worked wonderfully.

I guess can give it a try to see if works. If it doesn't work however, is there anything special I will need to do to when I put the old raid drives back in?

Thanks for your help.

I found the reason I couldn't remove them was because of the permissions in the registry. I tried changing them, but they wouldn't propagate down through the sub keys. It was a big PIA to go through each subkey and take ownership and then change permissions.

In the end, I removed the network card, disabled the onboard nic, and then when I booted up, I was able to easily delete the phantom nics in Device Manager.

That's great. Yes you can give it a try. If it doesn't work, simply remove the new drives and connect the old drives to their original positions.

Good idea checking against the R1304RP. They should be similar.

Below are the commands to check for the PS device and fru using IPMIutil in script form for windows.

Some PSU don't have a fru eeprom (it is optional and just tells you what type PSU you have)

The script reads are in raw format so they don't rely on pre-loaded SDR information. (i.e. the SDR command reads the systems SDR. The system SDRs are loaded by user and only load if the SDR BMC can talk to the device and if you could talk to the device, you would not be here.)

The 00 20 18 in the command sets up the addressing via the BMC.

0f is the I2C bus on the board and can change sometime. (the last generation of Intel board used 09)

B0 = PS1     B2 = PS2  A0 = PS1 FRU   A2 = PS2 FRU

01 = read 1 byte    08 = first 8 bytes (in hex)

98 = PMBUS command: Read PMBus version  (should return 10 or 11 as i recall)

Script BAT file.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
rem Using Master Write Read command to read the power supply PMBus commands
rem bus = 00
rem rsSa = 20 (BMC)
rem NetFn = App = 06 [NetFn/LUN = 0x18]
rem Cmd = Master Write-Read = 52
rem Data 1 = Bus ID[3:1] = bus 7, Bus ID[0] = private = 1
rem Data 2 = Slave Address = b0/b2
rem Data 3 = Read count
rem Data 4:N = Data to Write = Register to read
Re: JBOD2312S2SP Power Supply Issue?
Since my last post I have had run away fans twice; the last time was this morning.  The physical tab in RWC2, (latest Version), always says power cord removed when the fans run up from normal to high speed.  The unit is in as very small closet with a built in air conditioner, and even in the summer on hot days I have never seen the room temp above 62 degrees F.  Glad the servers are in the garage rather than my office.  It appears as I have said before, anytime the UPSs' intervene the fans go crazy.  Would be nice to have a fix as we are in talks with a client to put one of these in an office for storing backup images.
Claudio,
There are two "types" of embedded RAID on your Z9PE-D16. Either LSI MegaRAID or Intel Rapid Storage Technology enterprise. Obviously there are different drivers for each of these.
I believe you should be able to designate one or the other of these two technologies within the Z9PE-D16 BIOS. Make sure you are using the correct driver for LSI MegaRAID or RSTe.
Chapter 5 of the Z9PE-D16 Series motherboard manual has pretty good configuration instructions.
Regards,
John
Sorry Claudio. There is a jumper to select between LSI MegaRAID or RSTe. That's in the note on the first page of chapter 5 in the manual.
Steve,
So it sounds like your UPS is kicking in because of a power failure..correct? If so..it almost sounds like the JBOD is rebooting. Do you have 1 power supply or 2 power supplies in the JBOD?
I've copied a technical marketing engineer in a seperate email..asking if he's had other customers with this same fan issue. When I hear something from him I'll let you know
Almost; I just happened to be right next to the closet, which is in my garage when the lights flickered.  The 3 servers kept running because of the UPSs' but the fans on the JBOD ran back up to high speed.  None of the servers shut down because the UPSs' are not set to shut thing down in one second; but after 5 minutes.  The RWC log showed that both power cord had been removed and power supply status was unknown.  Did the same thing I always do, shut down the server that the JBOD is connected to, shutdown the JBOD and restarted it and then restarted the server.  I originally had only one power supply, and bought a second one and both are installed now.  I have had them connect to the same UPS and connected to different UPSs' (Two UPSs' in the rack).  Once I thought I had it figured out because RWC log would show one cord had been removed, so I put both power supplies on the UPS that had not come on line, but that did not fix it either.  The event logs in the server never show an unexpected shutdown or disk issues.  The server is currently shutdown (Lab with 3 VMs)  Going to be going up to Server 2012 R2 over the weekend I hope.
Thanks again.
I'm going to attempt it tomorrow morning. Will report back if it works.
Assuming the disk is part of an existing RAID, you can use the Mark Offline option, remove it, and put in the replacement without having to bring down anything.
Re: MFSYS25 Switch module problem
If you have two switches, and haven't done this already, down the administrative link between them:
From the CMM GUI, choose System | Switches | Advanced Configuration
Mouse over any port and choose Port Configuration
Select Port | 10G.XC | Admin Status | Down
and Port | 10G.SC | Admin Status | Down
If you only have one switch, then either you're getting some bad STP traffic, or the switch might be going bad.  Can you check the Event Log for the switch, and see if there are occurrences of STP stopping ports from transmitting?
For both the board and the processor, you can click on COMPATIBLE PRODUCTS to see a complete list of what will work.
Neither product lists the other as compatible, so that is not a supported combination.
I see you have also opened the same thread on the Dell support forums.  That is your best bet for getting an answer.
Have you already verified that your system supports that OS, and have you already updated all relevant drivers for Vmware?
I haven't seen such a problem before.  Do you have another OS you can install as a test, to see if the hardware itself is functional?
Hello,
Yes, i open a thread in DELL support to seek more help, but so far any response!
I updated all drivers and could not solve the problem. I think the conflict is in the network adapters that are Intel Pro 1000.
Does anyone ever had a similar problem to my?
Bad news. As you suspected the Acronis software did not see any of my drives after I installed the new raid drives and inseted my old slot 0 raid dirve in slot 3 and booted to Acronis.
I removed the new raid drives and re-installed the old raid drives ( in their original slots) and rebooted. The system started but the Raid Web server popped up with an error on the drive in slot 0 and automatically started a rebuild.
After about 10 minutes the system crashed (blue screen). Upon rebooting again both drives were marked offline and I couldn't do anything on the subject server to get either of them to boot.
Both drives are accessible when installed on a Windows 8.1 machine i use for utility work so there is no apparent data loss on the drives ( I also have full data backups) but in order to use the larger drives on the server I started the 2 day clean install process of the entire system and applications.
