HI -

Thanks for following up - Im still waiting on some info from Asus -

I am going to try one CPU at a time and a single Ram module to isolate - I just have not done it yet since I need several hours of downtime to try it -

Thank You

Hello David

Is there a way to fix the problem?

Hi Powermania,

I'm sorry for the delayed answer on this, I made some research and I think to answer to your question we need to take step back.

This Intel® Xeon® Gold 5118 processor, works at a base frequency of 2.3GHz and Max. Turbo Frequency of 3.2 GHz. The automatic process of increasing processor frequency depends on its work load and cannot be set at any given specific and fix operation frequency. Meaning there is no accurate way to perform the calculation as it will go up and down automatically.
Most likely with a given configuration, all the devices will decrease the general operational frequency at the lower device frequency. (Memory, processor, motherboard, etc.).

Also for further reference you may also check the documentation on the system you are using:

Dell support:
http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/product-support/product/poweredge-r640/research

Dell PowerEdge R640 Technical Specifications
http://topics-cdn.dell.com/pdf/poweredge-r640_reference%20guide2_en-us.pdf

note: Intel does not endorse the usage of third party sites or documentation.

I hope this answer your question, if there is anything else I can do for you or if we're ok to set this trend as closed please let me know so we can proceed accordingly, I'll stay tuned to your comments.

Regards.

Hello Henry and thank you for your answers!

I am sorry I didn't respond earlier but in the meanwhile I emailed Supermicro support about the same thing. Unfortunately I haven't been able to get an answer on whether it can be cleared or not. They are currently trying to find out.

I followed the instructions in page 40 to 46, but I still cannot clear the tpm. I still get the same error as in my previous post. What am I doing wrong? According to the documentation I should be able to clear it. Any ideas?

is S2600CP and S1200KP server board affected by the SA-00086 vulnerability?

Hi there,

I am trying to ascertain if the Intel Server Board S2600CP fitted with 2 Xeon E5-2603 processors is affected by the Intel Management Engine vvulnerability - SA-00086?

Also the same question for the S1200KP board fitted with an E3-1225 V2 CPU.

The article Intel® Product Security Center  suggests that they aren't affected but other information on the net implies that the product list on that page is incomplete.

Can anyone advise?

Many Thanks

Richard

Hi,

are you still working on the problem or is it not solvable?

Random fan spin-up on R1304SPOSHBNR

$
0
0

I have recently purchased three S1200SPOR servers, and they all three are having the same issue: at random intervals, the fans will spin up to max for just a second or two before settling back down. These intervals can be anywhere from a few minutes to an hour, and they do not correlate with server load.

I have upgraded the firmware to S1200SP.86B.03.01.0026.092720170729, check for thermal trips, and examined the SEL, but they didn't help. However, in watching the IPMI sensors, I did notice one correlation: the times when the fans spin up seem to correspond to the sensors being unable to read "P1 Therm Margin". My conclusion was that the system is occasionally unable to read the power supply temperature, so it spins up the fans "just in case", but on the next reading it reads the temperature correctly and so returns the fans to normal.

I checked the sensor wire and it is secure. (Fiddling with it doesn't trigger the fan response either.) I might conclude a hardware fault, but this is happening on all three systems, each of which were purchased at different times over the last few months.

I also found this thread: R1304SPOSHBNR 1U chassis fans randomly spin up to maximum for a few seconds and then go back to normal. but the information isn't any help since the SEL doesn't report any errors, the problem is intermittent, I don't have a RAID controller in them, and the standard checks didn't reveal anything promising.

If anyone has any ideas on where to go next, I would appreciate the input.

Thanks!

Hello RichardBurdon,

Thanks for joining the community.

As you correctly state these particular models are not affected by the Intel Management Engine vulnerability. Actually what is really affected are the processors itself but the fix is applied to the BIOS in the board so that's why some board models show up listed.

For the processors affected go to: https://security-center.intel.com/advisory.aspx?intelid=intel-sa-00086&languageid=en-fr

And for the available fix got to: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000026357/server-products.html?_ga=2.131571151.1954420935.1513297638-1829137013.1476322867

Hope this helps

Does the S2600CP board support an LSI SAS 9210-8i HBA Card? If so, is there anything special i need to do to see the bios?

I have it installed, the led is green and another is steady blinking green so i believe it has power but i cannot see any bios on startup and have tried holding CTRL-C on boot to no affect.

I currently have 3 HD's and 1 SSD plugged into the SATA port on the board currently, do i need to disable or unplug some drives?

Hello Manolis,

I hope you are doing well!  Not sure how the BIOS on this board could be set.  I will recommend to also remove power and battery from the board, then look for a jumper to clear BIOS/CMOS and then connect only power to try and boot, this should clear and set to factory settings.

I hope this information helps

If there is anything else we can help please feel free to ask.

Hello Paulsbarnes88,

Regarding your question, installed a RSP3DD080F and is not been recognized.
Also, you have mentioned is running the latest BIOS.
Could you please provide me the configuration you have setup right now:

  • Number of processors.
  • Memory configuration.
  • PCI port the RSP3DD080F is connected.
  • Also, check BIOS Boot Manager under boot devices to see if the card is part of the bootable devices.

If there is anything else we can help please feel free to ask.

Best regards,

Hello th3godf4th3r,

Regarding your question, if an LSI SAS 9210 is compatible with an S2600CP intel board.
This particular model is not part of the compatible hardware list, you can find this on S2600CP Compatible.
I found that the Intel card - RS2BL080 uses the same chipset as the LSI SAS 9210.
Also, could you please provide me the configuration you have setup right now:

  • Number of processors.
  • Memory configuration.
  • PCI port the RSP3DD080F is connected.
  • Also, check BIOS Boot Manager under boot devices to see if the card is part of the bootable devices.

If there is anything else we can help please feel free to ask.

Best regards,

Hello John,

Thank you for contacting Intel Technical Support.

In order to further understand the issue please download the system information retrieval utility from here, then uncompress the .zip file into a usb key and boot from it.  After that run the file sysinfo.efi.  This utility will collect log files and system information that we expect will help us figure out what the problem is the server fans.

I ended up finding how to setup the raid card, the new server boards has in the bios under pci configuration uefi option rom control. inside of there you find the raid card. From that menu you can configure the raid controller.

in the documentation for the board and raid makes no mention of this option, so for people that have building intel servers with a raid card still think there is a crtl r option. The documentation should be updated with the proper steps so as to help others not have this problem anymore

Hi Franklin, thank you for replying. Here are the logs you requested.

For context, the critical events listed in the SEL on the 13th were from me troubleshooting the issue. There have been numerous fan spin-up events since then.
